STORY
Monkey Mt. Island was a site-specific piece, that utilized approximately 1700 meters of fishing nets and ropes sourced from Yokosuka's fishing port.
Prior to the event's opening, a performance guided by the Instruction formed a ball-like structure resembling a clump of wool, intricately connecting and tying the materials together. Throughout the exhibition period, the sandy beach became a canvas for the unfolding process, showcasing a large sphere sculpted through the instructions and offering a panoramic view of the sea.

My intention was to spotlight the often-overlooked boundary between the island and the water, inviting viewers to visualize and contemplate the natural environment extending beneath the surface of Sarushima's waters. Moreover, it served as an opportunity for festival attendees to engage with nature, aligning seamlessly with the overarching theme of the art festival.
This piece was conceived for Sense Island Sarushima Dark Museum, a nocturnal event held exclusively on Sarushima, an uninhabited island in Yokosuka City. The festival's theme, 'Rediscovering Human Senses in the Darkness,' inspired me to explore the island's unique sensations through extensive site visits, culminating in the creation of this immersive artwork.
猿山の島は、横須賀市にある無人島・猿島で、夜間にのみ開催される「Sense Island -感覚の島- 暗闇の美術館」のために制作されたサイト・スペシフィックな作品です。
島の円周が約1700mであることに着目し、視察を経てインストラクションを執筆しました。海が一望できる砂浜を展示場所とし、横須賀の漁港で使用されている釣り網やロープを素材として活用しました。素材を結びつなぎながら、毛玉のような球体を造作するパフォーマンスを行いました。展示期間中は、インストラクションとそのプロセスから生まれた巨大な球体が展示されました。

この作品は、見過ごしがちな水辺との境界線に着目し、猿島の海面下に続く自然を想像すること、そして本芸術祭の趣旨である「暗闇の中で人間の感覚を取り戻す」ことや、自然との関係を探る機会を提供することを目指して制作しました。
