STORY

Professionals in School (PinS) Project takes place at the Tomioka Elementary and Junior High Schools and invites professionals from diverse creative fields—such as artists, architects, and musicians—to act as 'transfer students,' immersing themselves in school life alongside children in an educational setting. Launched in 2018, following their reopening after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in 2011, the overarching goal is to foster a dynamic environment of mutual learning that transcends generations.

  • PinS Project Approach to Learning
    We believe that learning happens when it occurs unexpectedly. PinS' transfer students are encouraged to provide minimal professional guidance to their peers. By avoiding excessive knowledge transfer and unilateral teaching, we create opportunities for children to actively discover their powers of observation, insight, and inherent creativity. Additionally, we foster a multigenerational education environment where everyone acts as a mediator for learning. We prioritize understanding the growth and interests of each child, focusing on what we can do for each individual rather than what resonates universally. Through this approach, we aim to cultivate an environment where both children and adults learn, grow, and adapt. As part of this initiative, transfer students annually conceptualize and create artwork inspired by their school experiences, with all pieces being collected by the Tomioka Board of Education upon completion.

    Background and Partnership
    The town of Tomioka (Tomioka-machi) witnessed significant developments post-disaster. In April 2017, the evacuation order was partially lifted, with further relaxations planned for the future. I played a key role in the 2017 Tomioka-machi Education Promotion Plan Review Committee (a.k.a. Tomioka-machi Manabi-o Kangaeru Kai), contributing to the creation of an action plan for school reopening in 2018. This plan aimed to redefine education as a multi-generational endeavor, aligning with Tomioka-machi's long-standing educational policies. Subsequently, a comprehensive partnership agreement was signed with Tomioka-machi in August of the same year, leading to the launch of the PinS Project.

    This initiative involves professionals from various fields setting up workplaces in Tomioka-machi-run elementary and junior high schools, enriching the educational experience for students. Presently, we are focused on implementing the PinS Project's vision of "education without teaching= an environment where chance is generated" in both the educational field and the local community, aiming to create a vibrant community where creative activities foster continuous growth and dynamism.

    Tomioka-machi In April 2017, the evacuation order was lifted except for the "difficult-to-return zone," and on March 10, 2020, the evacuation order for a part of the "difficult-to-return zone" was newly lifted, and by 2023, the evacuation order for the rest of the "difficult-to-return zone" will be lifted. Currently, about 2,000 people live in the town.

プロフェッショナル・イン・スクールプロジェクト(通称:PinSプロジェクト)は、2018年4月、東日本大震災・福島第一原発事故から7年ぶりに再開した福島県双葉郡富岡町に富岡町立小中学校を舞台にスタートしました。各界のプロ、特にアーティスト、建築家、音楽家、職人などクリエイティブな職種のプロフェッショナルが「転校生」として、校舎を仕事場としながら子ども達と学校生活を共にし、アーティストインレジデンスの要素も特徴的な活動です。

  • PinSプロジェクトでは、「教えない教育=偶然性が生まれる環境」を目指す仕組みをPinSモデルと定義し、知識や技術を大人が教えすぎないことで、子どもの観察・洞察力、そして本来一人一人が持っている発想力や創造性を能動的に見出す機会を創出し、関わる人全てが学びをつくる媒介者となる多世代教育を目指し、実践しています。

    場所特有の個性を生かした富岡町の未来を描くためにも、既存の枠の外で物事を考えることを得意とするクリエイティブな思考を持つ人たちが関わることは必要だと考えます。

    また、プロフェッショナル転校生のもう一つの特徴となるのが、毎年転校生期間中に学校に残すための作品を制作することです。この作品制作のプロセス自体が学びの環境をつくること、同時に転校生の学校生活での経験自体を作品という記憶のアーカイブとして蓄積する意図もあります。
