STORY

Until The Day I Name This Moment is a participatory work rooted in the personal narratives of MATSUTANI Midori, my creative partner born and raised in a small rural village of Dorogawa in Nara Prefecture. It all started with a conversation with her about an original poem gifted to me by TANIKAWA Shuntaro, which sparked a collaborative journey to embroider Midori's experiences and reflections on marriage.

  • The act of naming, whether giving or receiving, encapsulates the essence and significance of each moment, etching into eternity the intuition and values it embodies. It transcends mere words, condensing unseen elements like unexpected expectations and the collective consciousness of others, evolving into something tangible and profound. This ritual extends beyond individuals, permeating all material existence.

Inspired by the poetry of Tanigawa, bestowed upon me, this participatory artwork blossomed from dialogues with Midori Matsutani, a native of Dorogawa. Set amidst the backdrop of her family's abode, the "Saratani Sake Store," and her present life at "Matsutani Seizo Honpo," as a married woman, the project unfolded. Alongside her husband, Mitsunao, we delved into reminiscences, breathing life into forgotten moments and resurfacing emotions tied to events where "names changed." Sewing acted as a conduit, intertwining conversations with Midori, tracing the contours of celebratory "moments" and everyday fragments captured in photographs with threads.

Through deliberate stitches on pure white cotton fabric, Midori reaffirmed her present sentiments, weaving her journey forward. It provided a window into the rhythm of their daily lives, grounding Dorogawa's essence and offering a glimpse into its soul.

Throughout the festival, Midori engaged visitors within the familiar confines of her household, turning mundane routines into conversational performances. Chance encounters and storefront conversations reignited memories, blurring the lines between past and present.

A collection of 58 potions, mirroring Midori's years, emerged—each a mysterious "secret potion" handed over in encounters, leaving her intuition to decide when and to whom to deliver. This artwork served as a fleeting moment of contemplative dialogue.

Participation is integral to fully embrace and conclude this work, as it invites interaction with the embroidered narratives within. The diversity of interpretations by each participant lies at its core.
