STORY
A Thousand Whisker Roots was a participatory and site-specific work consisting of 1,000 hand-made canes crafted by us and volunteers from freshly cut branches sourced from the local mountain. These canes were evenly scattered throughout three festival venues. The work would be completed by performing the ritual of burning the canes with the sacred flame was an important element, in demonstrating gratitude towards nature.
Created for the "Mind Trail OKUYAMATO - Museum in your mind-" (also known as A Walking Art Festival), this piece was installed at the starting point of the Mind Trail. Its purpose was to physically support participants' walking while evoking a profound sense of connection to nature, which aligns with the festival's ethos."

Following the Instruction, which was an integral part of the installation, participants were encouraged to select a cane of their liking and pass it on like a baton in a relay. This process accumulated the experiences and souls of participants, nurturing an invisible collaborative artwork.
Okuyamato, located in the eastern part of Nara Prefecture and boasting 90% of its forest area, offered not only natural beauty but also a rich cultural heritage shaped by human activities. During our research trip, as we traversed the land, we were once again drawn to the "roots and whiskers" deeply embedded in the earth, drawing energy from the ground and supporting the trees.
Throughout the festival, the work served as a testament to the journey itself. Each cane not only supported the participant along the way but also functioned as a companion, akin to an antenna or a cat's whisker, guiding their sense of touch and feel.
千本のひげ根は、2020年にスタートした「Mind Trail奥大和 - 心のなかの美術館-」のために構想した作品です。奈良県地元の山で育ったヒノキ(檜)の生枝を造作した総数1000本の杖が、会場全エリア (吉野町、曽爾村、天川村など) のスタート地点に点在し、参加者の歩みを支え、自然と対峙する触媒となる参加型作品でした。
芸術祭期間中、杖はリレーのバトンのように引き継がれ、参加した人々の経験や魂が杖に宿り蓄積されることで育まれる目には見えない共同作品でした。毎年芸術祭の最終日に、自然への感謝の気持ちと芸術祭参加者の経験がこもった杖を、大峰山龍泉寺で神聖な炎で焚き上げていただき、作品は完成しました。

杖が触媒となり、自分自身と自然の力・恩恵と対話をしながら、参加者の心だけに芽生える光景を想像していただけたらと思い制作しました。
2022年は、詩人・覚 和歌子とのコラボレーションも実現し、彼女の詩文が道しるべとなり天川村エリアを体験する「千本のひげ根と千の寿詞（ことば）」を制作しました。
作品への思い（展示解説文より抜粋）
芸術祭会場に点在する総数1,000本に及ぶ杖に刻まれた一つ一つの傷や凹みは、旅路の記憶そのものであり、またその杖は、道中自らの身体を支えることだけでなく、一人一人の伴侶のような存在でもあり、まるで触角や猫の髭のような触覚、感触を司る役割として参加者の旅路に同行します。それらの杖は、地元の山から生枝（檜）を切り出し、一本一本の枝の特徴を生かしながら造作されています。自然の美しさはもちろんのこと、人の営みによって生まれた文化を強烈に感じさせるこの奥大和。視察の際、私たちはこの土地を歩きながら、あらためて大地に深く、そしてしっかりと根を張り巡らせて、地中からのエネルギーを取り込み、木々たちを支える 「根、ひげ根」に着目しました。
